    This 197-page book examines the mining of potassium nitrate (Saltpeter) during the Civil War, in the Counties of Bath, Highland, Pendleton (WV), Pocahontas (WV), Rockbridge, Augusta, Rockingham, Shenandoah, and Page.  A portion of Alleghany County also provided niter to the Staunton office.
    It explains the manufacturing process to make saltpeter, lists the men employed in making it, and also examines the Iron industry in the same area.
    The book covers the time period of 1862 through early 1865.
