Aspiring artist William H. Tipton
learned the photographer's craft at age twelve in 1863, the same year the Civil War touched his hometown of Gettysburg, Pa. It is perhaps not surprising that Tipton would become the best-known battlefield photographer practicing in the latter half of the nineteenth century. By his death in 1929, he had amassed thousands of views of landmark locations in the fields and woods at Gettysburg.
