Description

Here is Civil War book:  "RELUCTANT PARTNERS: NASHVILLE and the UNION - July 1, 1863 to June 30, 1865".  Written and SIGNED ( see photo # 12 ) by Walter T. Durham of Gallatin, Tennessee in 1987.
" During the last two years of the Civil War, Nashville became the largest supply center serving the Union Army west of the Appalachians.  Although the populace was hesitant to join forces with the Union, a partnership was slowly forged that contributed mightily to the success of Federal arms in Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia and South Carolina."
" The lines of battle had moved over one hundred miles South of Nashville by the Fall of 1863, yet guerrillas constantly harassed water and rail transportation routes into the City.  Rebel Cavalry units periodically moved in behind Union lines and raced about the county south of Nashville making a mockery of Union security."
