Description
A RARE 1893 issue of the CONFEDERATE WAR JOURNAL with Gov Letcher and Gen Joseph E. JohnstonA short-lived competitor to the Confederate Veteran Magazine:
“THE CONFEDERATE WAR JOURNAL”
Volume 1, Number 4. July, 1893.
A scarce magazine (about 8 x 11.25”), published in New York & Lexington, KY, pages 50-84.
Nice portrait on the front cover of Governor John Letcher of Virginia, and on the first page of CSA General Joseph E. Johnston.
Besides a brief article on Joseph Johnston, most of this issue is devoted to a study of the Battle of First Manassas. The center of the issue has a nice double-page illustration that also pictures the Battle of Manassas.
--It is rather unusual to find issues of this journal with their original covers intact since they (the covers) consist of paper of quite poor rag content. Both the front and back covers are present on this issue. The front cover is stained (see scan below) but it is otherwise in good condition and still attached at the spine. The back cover has a bent corner and is NEARLY DETACHED at the spine, but is otherwise intact.
--The interior pages have a few tears along the edges and some stains but are otherwise in good condition. The pages are complete and quite readable.
The scan below shows the front and back covers of the magazine and the double page illustration at the center of the issue.
This magazine is seldom offered for sale in any condition.
