Today we are pleased to offer for sale a beautiful pair of antique Royal Vienna porcelain horse figures from the estate of Claiborne Pell, a prominent Rhode Islander and beloved Senator who helped to create the Pell Grant, which is a subsidy the U.S. federal government provides for students who need it to pay for college.
This elegant pair of figures is a creation of the Vienna Porcelain Manufactory Augarten. A bit of info on the company:
The historic Vienna Porcelain Manufactory (1718–1864) was the second porcelain manufactory to be established in Europe. Dating back to a privilege given by the emperor to Claudius Innocentius du Paquier in 1718, it was, after Meissen porcelain, Europe's second oldest producer of hard-paste porcelain. Since 1744, pieces bore the shield from the coat of arms of the Dukes of Austria as a trademark.
The original Vienna manufactory went out of business in 1864. After that, the main porcelain factory of the Austro-Hungarian empire was the Herend Porcelain Manufactory, which had been competing with the Vienna manufactory as purveyors to the Imperial Court. The porcelain of the original Vienna manufactory is often referred to as Alt Wien ("Old Vienna") porcelain, to distinguish it from the products of the new Augarten manufactory.
The new porcelain manufactory in Augarten was established in 1923. It revived the traditions of the old Vienna porcelain manufactory by continuing the production methods and patterns of the historic manufactory.
The figures are finely crafted and detailed of porcelain with a pristine white (Blanc de Chine) glaze. The sculptures are modeled after the original by Otto Jarl (German, 1856-1915), and depict a mighty stallion in pesade. He has a long wavy tail and mane and life-like face and expression. The horse stands on an oval base with textured detailing. The pieces are signed on the base "Jarl S", and marked underneath with the maker's mark.
The pair presents well and is in good antique condition, with display wear, minor scuffing and patina commensurate with age. Both horses have chips to the tips of ears, and a stable hairline fracture above the left back hoof. Please review all photos before purchasing.
This beautiful pair of figures will make a wonderful addition to any Royal Viennna collection... Fresh to the market!
