Conscription in the Confederacy
The draft, unpopular everywhere, nowhere met greater resistance than in the beleagured Confederacy. Indeed, the interference of some officials with its workings bordered on treason.

General R. E. Lee on Conscripting Slaves
In January 1865 Andrew Hunter wrote to Lee, sounding out the commander's views on the possibility of using armed slaves to fill the sadly depleted Southern ranks. Lee's reply was as follows.

Paying the Debt
After the Civil War, the government set about the monumental task of providing its veterans with pension benefits and disability allowances for their years of services. The results were more often than not unequal to the need, and corruption and fraud ran rampant, but still a grateful nation tried its best to reward the men who saved it.
