    Description

"A WOMAN DOCTOR'S CIVIL WAR--ESTHER HILL HAWKS' DIARY" is an incredible day-by day diary during the period of 1862 through 1866. Esther Hill Hawks was a physician, a Northerner, a teacher, a suffragist and an abolitionist. While most woman of the 1860s stayed home taking care of their families, Esther went south to minister to black Union troops and newly freed slaves as both teacher and doctor. She kept a daily diary and described, in detail, the South she saw. Her pen missed nothing as she traveled through a hungry, ailing land. Here are liberated slaves and their hungry children, swaggering carpetbaggers, occupation troops far from home and zealous missionaries. Here are the Sea Islands, Florida, and Charleston. This is a VERY mesmerizing read! The original diaries from which this book was printed were, incredibly, found in a pile of trash in Essex County, Massachusetts in 1975!
Book is softback published in 1989. It is in EXCELLENT CONDITION, is a former library book (private library--Alice Pendleton Library, Islesboro, Maine), measures 6" x 9" and contains 292 pages.
