The Airedale originated in Yorkshire, England. They are traditionally called the "King of Terriers" because they are the largest of the terrier breeds. Sometimes known as the Waterside Terrier because of their use in hunting otters, they are also used in England as Police dogs.
The Airedale's coat was uniquely adapted to protect the dog from predators. The coat would come out in the claws of their attackers, leaving the dog unharmed.
The Airedale, like most terriers, has been bred to hunt. They are intelligent, independent and strong-minded, and can sometimes be stubborn. But if trained properly, Airedales can do well with children as well as other animals, especially if they are raised with them.
