Description
Mary Boykin Chesnut (1823-1886) published her Civil War diary which provided a vivid picture of society, mostly from her perspective of her upper class society. The diary runs from 1861 to 1865. She was the society wife of a lawyer who had served as a US Senator, and a Confederate officer and as an aide to Confederate States President Jefferson Davis. She was a first hand witness to many historic events as she traveled extensively with her husband during the war. The diary was first published in 1905. This offering is the 1929 reprint that was printed by D. Appleton and Company. All 424 pages are intact, not torn or marked, and are firmly attached to the spine. The pages are clean although some light foxing appears evenly on the edge of the pages. This brown cloth bound hard cover edition has a 1 inch tear on the bottom edge which can be seen in the photos, but is otherwise is intact although the inside back cover is starting to show separation at the spine (also see picture). The original owner’s name, Mrs. John Wilson, is written in pencil in nice script on the inside cover. Another small signature or name also appears on the top of the following page written in pencil, but is too light to photograph. The name is S.H. Lander. I do not have any information on the identities of these person and have done no research on them.
