we offer a rare and unusual Civil War relic: the January through June, 1865 collection of Punch Almanacks, published in London.  These are the actual magazines bound together at mid-year, as was a common practice at the time. Punch was a political humor magazine with social commentary, and was densely filled with large, interesting cartoons.
As 1865 marked a conclusion to the most dire and bloodiest of American conflicts, the Civil War, this collection features Civil War-themed political cartoons, including full-page images of Lincoln. The Brits
looked on the war as a savage expression of Northern dominance, so these are cartoons
lampooning America, cynical of Lincoln, sympathetic to the South. This collection
a
lso includes the notice of Lincoln's assassination with a memorial illustration and a striking poetic lamentation, which seems a self-rebuke, the magazine chiding its own malicious satire.
Worn boards; book has been repaired at outer right spine edge with tulle and binder's adhesive (please see pics).  Front gutter is split, though hinges are secure and binding is very square and firm. Minor foxing. Very clean, bright and crisp illustrations and text on high quality pulp.  Approximately 11 x 8.75-inches, 268 indexed pages.
