    Description

When the War Between the States started the Lincoln administration added all religious material to their contraband list of what was banned from going to the South.
The reason for this was because of John Brown smuggling rifles into Harpers Ferry in boxes marked “Bibles” to try to start a slave insurrection.
The South and especially it’s soldiers were destitute for religious material.
The American Bible Society in New York smuggled a complete set of plates for a New Testament to the Confederate States Bible Society in Augusta so when they had presses, paper and ink they could print a New Testament for the Southern troops.
We are offering a reprinted copy of that same American Bible Society New Testament which is in our own personal collection.
The Union version has a pasted in presentation stamp from the New York Bible Society, “To The Defenders of Our nation”.
This paste in stamp is also reprinted from an original in our collection.
The cover is black, hard bound with the word “TESTAMENT” in gold on the spine.
    The size is 3 ¾” x 5 ½” tall and ¾” thick.
